7 rules in New Jersey Protecting Against Forever Chemicals Act, P.L. 2025, c. 202 (C.56:3-56), for products sold, from 12 Jan 2028. Conditions differ by rule; see below.
- PFAS as defined in New Jersey (US state)
Applies when: Food-contact product; Used with heat · Operative date is computed from text: "Beginning two years after the effective date of this act" and "17. This act shall take effect immediately." with "Approved January 12, 2026." Two years after 2026-01-12 is 2028-01-12. Cookware: durable houseware for direct food contact to which heat is transferred or which contacts a heat source; excludes commercial-use-only products.
Subsection 7(c) has no date of its own; it implements the 7(a)/(b) label duty, which starts two years after the effective date. The 7(e) exemption (cookware too small for a two square inch label, with no wrapper or tag) is from "the labeling requirements of this section"; the online statement is the label statement carried to the listing, so it is exempted too.
Applies when: Food-contact product; Used with heat · Section 8(a): "Beginning two years after the effective date of this act" (same date as sections 5-7 in this rule set).
Applies when: Food-contact product; Used with heat; Claim: PFAS-free · Operative date is computed from text: "Beginning two years after the effective date of this act" and "17. This act shall take effect immediately." with "Approved January 12, 2026." Two years after 2026-01-12 is 2028-01-12. Cookware: durable houseware for direct food contact to which heat is transferred or which contacts a heat source; excludes commercial-use-only products. Treated as a ban conditioned on the claim.
Every product in the category · Operative date is computed from text: "Beginning two years after the effective date of this act" and "17. This act shall take effect immediately." with "Approved January 12, 2026." Two years after 2026-01-12 is 2028-01-12. "Carpet" means a rug or fabric marketed or intended for use as a floor covering. Fabric treatments are substances with no matching product type.
Every product in the category · Section 17: "This act shall take effect immediately." Approved January 12, 2026 (end of the chapter text). Operative sections apply "Beginning two years after the effective date of this act", so the start date is 2028-01-12 (derived from those two sentences; no calendar date is printed for the operative dates). Food packaging = nondurable package, packaging component or food service ware composed in substantial part of paper, paperboard or plant-fibre material.
Every product in the category · The act is approved January 12, 2026 and takes effect immediately (sec. 17, published text: 'Approved January 12, 2026'); the prohibition starts two years after, computed as 2028-01-12. No calendar date is printed for the prohibition itself.
